Munthiri Kothu: Traditional Kanyakumari Jaggery Delicacy

Kanyakumari heritage and preparation

In Kanyakumari tradition, no auspicious festival, wedding or homecoming is complete without Munthiri Kothu. Whole green gram (moong) is roasted slowly in earthen or iron pans until deeply fragrant and nutty, then coarsely ground. Freshly grated coconut is roasted golden, blended with ground dry ginger (chukku) and green cardamom. Boiling hot pure jaggery syrup is poured over the roasted mixture, and while still warm, it is swiftly rolled into small marble-sized spheres and clustered together. The clusters are dipped in a light rice and turmeric batter and fried in hot oil to create a crisp protective shell.

What it tastes like

A delightful contrast of textures. The crunchy outer golden coating gives way to a dense, nutty, aromatic center filled with roasted moong, chewy toasted coconut, and the deep earthy sweetness of pure jaggery. The dry ginger and cardamom provide a lingering warmth that balances the sweetness perfectly.

How to enjoy it

A beloved teatime companion and festive gift. The finger-friendly clusters make it an ideal sweet to share during Diwali gatherings, family celebrations and seasonal travel. It pairs wonderfully with black tea or spiced coffee.

Storage

Thanks to the thorough roasting of pulses and coconut and the low moisture of pure jaggery, Munthiri Kothu has a remarkably long shelf life without any chemical preservatives. Keep it in an airtight tin or glass jar in a cool, dry place. It retains its crispness and fresh flavor for up to four weeks.
